Valuable flight feedback to experience, learn and improve your feeling and piloting techniques. Improving yourself becomes a pleasure.
Aiming to fly far?
Aiming to fly long in the sky?
Be impressed of the capabilities of eVario. Flying with eVario will improve your performance. Keep in mind, no variometer of any high sensibility will teach you XC.
eVario accesses the device's GPS location data to retrieve your current position (latitude, longitude) and calculate derived data as altitude, speed, distance...
eVario records the realtime location data to a GPX file, which can be accessed/uploaded from your device using Files...
eVario shows you the realtime data in a tabular cockpit view with scrolling properties and feedbacks movement detection by acoustical means...
eVario is a flight instrument using gyroscope and accelerometer to drive the vario algorithms, rather than relying on barometric pressure alone. Why? It makes the system more sensitive and gives a lag-free response.
We’ve made this experience under several air circumstances. It works.
The issue with the broken access to Core Motion authorization in Privacy Settings menu is a known Apple iOS issue. This issue shows up with an App start subsequent to the iOS update. The consequence is that the barometer sensing is unavailable in eVario. We strongly recommend to update to our latest eVario2 which permanently resolves the issue.
The issue with the app freeze in Settings menu when scrolling fast downwards to 'Audio' section seems to be a known Apple Watch issue. This issue shows up with an App freeze and finally crash after app becomes unresponsive. We’ve experienced these issues especially when the Settings menu is rapidly scrolled down, since WatchOS 8.
As a workaround, it looks like mostly the freeze can be prevented by scrolling slowly when reaching the 'Audio' section, especially the 2nd slider 'Sink' (Sink Threshold). We're investigating a fix in our software.
--> fixed in WatchOS 9!
The issue with the intermittent GPS signal recording seems to be a known Apple Watch issue. This issue shows up with missing track segments in Health App Routes. We’ve experienced these issues especially when the Apple Watch is operated without the paired iPhone being present and connected via Bluetooth, since iOS14 and WatchOS7. More rarely, this issue is caused by weak gps signal reception.
As a workaround, it looks like mostly the gps tracking on the watch is working while the Bluetooth paired iPhone is connected. Please checkout the Thread on Apple's support communities. We are sorry for this issue and hope Apple will fix it soon.
We are pleased to announce the popular onboard variometer now has a little companion running on Watch, with all the required in-flight measurements. It integrates perfectly with your HealthKit to store your activities including associated tracks and metrics.
Under certain circumstances, eVario (v. 1.15.x) may not start properly after an iOS update. This happens under iOS 13.3.x installations. Investigated reason seems to be a denied access to App settings. We recommend to backup local flight tracks, uninstall eVario and re-install eVario. This resolves the issue.
eVario relies on highly sensitive embedded Apple hardware, i.e. MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), being constantly improved in terms of performance and accuracy.
The cockpit re-arrangement lets you customize your interface and experience. The cockpit shows basic information very clearly. The built-in vario tone (premium) is surprisingly equivalent to any professional brand variometer.
In particular the barometer data precision is relevant to soaring and XC flights. Apple has recently updated its MEMS hardware to best performance ever with realtime measurement. The typical relative air pressure accuracy is ±0.04 hPa (equivalent to ±30 cm). This precision is equivalent to any other external professional barometer.
The map comes along with the cockpit data in a synchronized split screen view, on large-sized devices Plus/Max onwards or iPad.

I just bought it and it looks great so far... I love the improvements you made to the app. Thanks a bunch!
Endlich mal was für iOS! Deine App ist sowas von spannend. Ich wünsche mir noch XC-/FAI-Assistenz.
I love to use the document/track browser to manage my files. It makes it much easier to handle tracks.
Your device has a lot of sensors which eVario can exploit. This is great and shall keep great. The energy consumption of these sensors has been optimized with latest hardware, but their impact is still visible on battery drain.
We recommend the use of an external power bank to reduce the impact of energy consuming sensors. The experience has shown that the usage of a 5000 mAh battery is largely sufficient to supply your device with energy for continuous usage over 3 days, with flight time up to 5 hours a day. The measurement switch in eVario's Cockpit is determinant for reduction of power consumption, once landed.
A landmark is used as a 3D reference point to identify your relative location compared to it.
Once this landmark is set to a landing zone, the Assistant will inform you of relevant metrics during your landing approach, helping you to better prepare and execute your landing.
Selecting your casing and tighly holding the ensemble by e.g. attaching it to your harness is primordial to your safety. Making your device and your aircraft one entity also provides you more reliable sensing results as e.g. the accelerometer will provide reliable signal impulses.
By allowing eVario Notifications, you'll be informed a new features implemented in an update.
Notifications are also a mean to alert you on mismatches in eVario's settings potentially leading to deactivated functionality or battery drain.
While eVario's Cockpit is active and measuring real time data, it is your sole responsibilty to not be distracted by any means from piloting your aircraft and keeping control of it at any time. Please read carefully the Disclaimer in eVario. By using eVario, you accept the terms mentioned in the Disclaimer.
Continued measurement and recording is ensured while the application becomes background.
Beside GPS, eVario uses the accelerometer, gyrometer, magnetometer and barometer sensors. Upon dynamic flight situation, an algorithm combining the data of all sensors is in use.
On Watch, solely the magnetometer is not available as not built-in. Check-out the iPhone Specs and Watch Specs.
eVario deploys its sensing power while in motion. The time lag (approx. 1s) is minimal during tracking.
The variometer functionality is continued as long as the main measurement switch is on.
Typically, audio signals for thermalling (lift/sink) and recording remain active regardless of whether eVario turns to background and another app becomes foreground, even unsolicited like an incoming call.
Maps of locations around the world are loaded by default (without any configuration from users) according your current GPS location for a certain user centered region. Multiple map styles like outdoor, satellite, relief and dark are supported.
Offline maps can be downloaded locally on your device for a region around your current location or flight path.
3D airspaces of regions around the world like North America, South America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, New-Zealand, Japan, etc are available. Additional regions can be integrated on demand just by contacting us.
The airspace assistance functionality warns about nearing airspaces and additionally explicitly at airspace entry.
eVario supports collaborative collision prevention system of OGN (Open Glider Network). The more users with OGN functionality are in air and connected (via mobile network), the better the coverage of collision detection. This feature requires an active internet connection.
Typical aircrafts registered in OGN live tracking and visible in eVario are: planes, helicopters like SearchAndRescue, deltas, paragliders or even drones, also shared with FLARM. OGN can also be used to let buddies track you (OGN live tracking link) during your flight, if you choose to share your position. Sharing your location is a necessary step to support Open Glider Network. However, only a unique ID is transmitted to OGN preventing from privacy leaks. Your aircraft is symbolised with a paraglider symbol on OGN live tracking map.
The Apple camera app can be called quite easily, regardless in which menu/sub-menu eVario is. The easiest we’ve experienced is like mentioned by Apple by calling the Control Center.
Call the camera app like mentioned by Apple.
While measurements are on, simply long press on the cockpit header. A shutter tone signals it's done.
The screenshot is saved in your Photo Library.
Split screen, i.e. the parallel display of the cockpit and the map view, is supported on iPhones with large-sized Plus or Max devices in landscape or on iPad models regardless of the device orientation, portrait or landscape.
The iPhone Max, like all of the previous Plus models (6 Plus, 7 Plus, 8 Plus) is still capable of split-screen landscape display mode. You just need to unlock Screen Rotation.
eVario2 is the continued development of eVario, with a new UI Design and additional features. eVario2 is the long term development stream. eVario will be maintained to address bug fixes. Details related to eVario are found under eVario (Gen1)
